Two of my Favorite Lent Specials

If you are looking for some good options for Lent dinners we checked out two last week for the start of Lent. With Ash Wednesday and the first Friday of Lent we had to make the decision of where to eat, which was a huge decision lol! I very much enjoy the specials the restaurants have for Lent and my list just keeps growing of places to try. Our first two places we tried were Brennan’s Fish House in Grand River, Ohio and Regovich Catering in Mentor, Ohio out of the LaMalfa building.

Ash Wednesday we went to Brennan’s Fish House, a family owned restaurant. This restaurant use to be one of my favorites and I use to go with one of my friends often. It had been a really long time since I had been there and it was so good to be back. This restaurant and building have such an interesting history, which they cover on their website. Some quick facts I found interesting, the building was built during the Civil War and was used for many things, then it was opened as a restaurant by the Brennan family and was sold in 2006. All or most of the items in the restaurant were donated to be displayed and it has a slight museum feel to it, with some really cool pieces.

They are doing a fish fry and their everyday menu all day on Fridays for Lent. The night we went we got the Golden Fried Shrimp and the Baked Haddock. We both got baked potato and coleslaw with our meals. The shrimp was fried to a nice crispy texture and they were pretty good size. The garlic sauce on the baked haddock gave it some good flavor. The coleslaw was probably one of the favorites that I have had recently, so we will see what happens the rest of Lent. Brennans coleslaw was light and had some mayo mixture but not to much so it was not “watered” down. The baked potato came with butter and sour cream and there were no complaints about it. The meals also came with two different types of bread and butter. I do have to say my husband had never been there and was a little nervous going so close to close, as during the week they close at 8. We got there and it was still pretty busy. We were sat quickly and the longest process of the whole night was us trying to decide what we wanted. We ordered and the food came out pretty quickly and everything was hot and delicious.

Our Friday option was Regovich Catering in Mentor. They are doing carry out only and would like the orders to be called in ahead of time. They can be reached at 440-946-9091 or at info@regovichcatering.com or for this info and more check out their webpage at regovichcatering.com. They are making meals from 4-7PM every Friday through Lent and the meals can be picked up at the LaMalfa building on Heisley Road.

The meals come with 2 beer battered pieces of Pollock, tarter sauce, Cabbage and Noodles, Mac and Cheese, Homemade Clam chowder, Fresh Coleslaw, roll and butter, and a fresh cookie for $15. You do have the option to purchase additional items for an additional cost. The fish and cabbage and noodles were amazing. I do think that when you get take out sometimes that the fish can get a little soft but this was still great and the cabbage and noodles were really good as well. Regovich’s Mac and cheese is some of my favorite and I wish I would have gotten an extra portion of it. A lot of places that do fish fry dinners have Mac and cheese that tastes like it is frozen or remade. Regovich’s Mac and cheese is so creamy and cheesy. I honestly do not eat Clam Chowder but my husband said it was amazing like every other year and took my portion for lunch this week. The only thing I was not a fan of was the coleslaw and I think it is just a preference thing. For me it was just okay compared to everything else. Lastly, they provide a cookie with every meal and even with my healthy eating I still tried a little bit of it and it was soft and amazing. I appreciate the setup of just pulling up, not leaving my vehicle and picking up my food and you get a good amount of great food for the price.

I can’t wait for tonight to try another new Lent special but if you are looking for my two suggestions so far I would pick one of these. The things to remember is Regovich Catering only does this during Lent. Brennans is open all year and I can’t wait to go back and sit on their patio once the weather gets warm. Happy Fish Fry Friday!!!!
